Test your shoe knowledge!

Over 4,000 years ago the first shoes were made of a single piece of rawhide that was wrapped around  the foot for both warmth and protection. Mmmm and people say there is no such thing as evolution!

Also most shoes around the world were identical until the first right and left paired shoes were introduced in Philadelphia around 1818 but their use didn’t become widespread until the 1850’s.

Thanks goodness that we live in a more enlightened time! Now where did I put those 6 inch stiletto heels!

Ahhhhhh the progress!

High heels ‘May improve love life’

An Article I found on BBC News. Give it a read. I’m not sure that I agree with the entire article, but very interesting thoughts.

Wearing higher heels – although perhaps not stilettos – may improve your pelvic floor muscles and in doing so boost your sex life, a study suggests. An Italian urologist and self-professed lover of the sexy shoe set out to prove that high heels were not as bad for women’s health as some suggest.

The shoe has been linked to a range of problems – from corns to schizophrenia.

But in a letter to European Urology, Dr Maria Cerruto said her research showed it was time to stand up for the heel.

Shoe style is dictated by fashion

In the past, as today, shoe style is dictated by fashion, among the upper classes, at least. Class distinction via footwear? Yes, shoe styles to indicate social rank is as old as the idea of footwear itself.

In ancient Egypt, the sandal demonstrated a person’s rank in society. Slaves either went barefoot or wore crude sandals made from palm leaves. Common citizens wore sandals of woven papyrus, consisting of a flat sole tied to the foot by a thong between the toes. But sandals with pointed toes were reserved only for the higher stations of society, and the colors red and yellow were taboo for anyone below the aristocratic rank.

Early European lawmakers have historically taken an oppressive interest in their subjects’ footwear can be partly explained by the way in which fashion was dictated in earlier centuries. To a great extent, the king himself was often the trend-setter, the aristocracy was expected to follow suit, and the peasantry was forbidden to emulate their betters.

Many monarchs opted for shoes that would best veil their physical shortcomings. If the fashion didn’t catch on naturally, well, laws could guarantee its implementation. For instance, the custom among men of wearing high-heeled shoes at the court of Louis XIV grew out of the Sun King’s desire to mask his small stature.

Compared to modern footgear, the shoes of earlier centuries were, for the most part, highly uncomfortable. It wasn’t until the development of woven stockings in the seventeenth century that footwear could be made snug-fitting and shaped to the foot.

Are you a small purse or a big purse kinda gal?

I normally carry a big purse rather than a small purse. I recently got a small purse for a birthday present and I can’t stand it, it has no room at all. I drag around a ton of stuff and sometimes it fells like I am hauling around a suitcase. When my shoulder starts hurting I know its time to start purging. I didn’t realize how much I have in that thing until I have a shoulder ache. Big purses are the way to go because of all the room, but still I am thinking of trying a smaller one.

The only reason why I’m thinking about trying a small purse is to see it I can stop myself from collecting a bunch of stuff. I have a very bad habit of of just tossing things into the the bottomless pit I carry around and tell myself that I will sort it out later. Most of the time later never happens. Well I have been looking at a couple and have it narrowed down too these two.
